The West 4th Handball Club, located in the Bronx, New York was started in June 2007. David Melendez, a former USHA Top Ten player and Computer Professional, is the Founder. Saroya C. Fanniel, a retired Network and Computer consultant, is the Technical Adviser and Secretary of the organization. Mr. Melendez and Ms. Fanniel have each spent 25 plus years in supervisory capacities for Fortune 100, 500 and Wall Street companies, non profits and government. Their combined experience includes Administration, Proposal Writing, Property Management, Technical Support and Network Design.
Known for his unusual shots, David Melendez has over 40 years in the sport. He has taught many young people, several of them are A-Players today. He played Singles games and Doubles with partner Angel Marquez, who can be seen in the independent documentary Handball film "Big Blue".
The West 4th Handball Club organizes and holds Handicap and Open Tournaments for inner-city youth within the five boroughs of New York who are 20 and under during the Summer. We dedicate one game of the season to an All Girls Tournament.
There is never an entry fee and we supply refreshments, balls, W4th Handball logo T-shirts and trophies. ALL IS FREE!
Handball has many challenges similar to those in Life. The concepts found on the court such as cooperation, endurance, patience, respect and acceptance can be translated into Life Lessons that will enhance a young person's perceptions. We want to show them that there are people who care about the kind of human being they will be and give them another perspective on their present conditions. Whatever their Life may bring to them there is always a choice. Nothing is insurmountable when you accept the challenge and use it as a lesson.
Handball is an excellent vehicle for our young people. We are committed to them and our community.
It is always a Blessing to find people with genuinely generous Spirits who freely share without expectations or agendas.
These two gentlemen define what it means to Give.
A regular sponsor of our Junior Boys Doubles Tournaments, known affectionately as “Magic” or “Magic Man”, has been a handball aficionado and supporter for many years. His expression of love for the game, by inspiring Competitive Spirit, can be found at any given moment on the courts of the Bronx and Manhattan. He is renowned for announcing, at the beginning of unofficial games, a ‘prize’ to the winner. This offering usually results in taking an otherwise casual game to a level which rivals any ‘official’ tournament. He has said, “I love to watch a great game.”
Our latest sponsor, Troy Taylor, from the Bronx has been an avid handball lover for many years. His contribution of funds for The 5th Annual Junior Boys & Girls Tournament was allocated towards refreshments, balls and supplies for our West 4th Handball Club Logo T-shirts. We appreciate his generous donation and look forward to working with him in the future.
